Rant Alert

The long-awaited study expected to call for a U.S. change of course in Iraq is due this AM.

Everyone agrees that this is a utter mess and has been for a long, long time. Fast forwarding a few months forward, and scenarios are being predicted with talk of civil war with scores of US troops being held hostage behind enemy lines.

The incoming Secretary of Defence testified yesterday in front of the Senate that a change in course is needed, contradicting his boss, Mr. Bush.

All this is not a surprise. It's disheartening, sad and disgraceful - but not a surprise.

My question remains the same. It's been the same for two freakn' years now...

Where the hell were the mainstream media all these years and months,
when we needed them the most?
:
Where has NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN been?
:
They put ZERO pressure on the administration.
They did NOT question.
They did NOT probe.
They did NOT do their jobs.
:
They followed the administration like actors in a bad, bad play.
:
The world knew what was going on, yet Americans did not!
They was told exactly what the US administration wanted them to know.
:
Where is Edward R. Murrow?
:
Where is Walter Conkrite?
:
Where are Woodward and Bernstein?
:
The US mainstream media did NOT represent the public.
They DID worry about their profits.
:
:
AAAARRRRGGGHHHHHH!
:
:
[Sorry for the rant - this crap just drives me crazy]
Oh yeah, one more item ....

Mr Bush won't allow the new Secretary of Defence to start his new job until January.
:
Why, you ask?
:
Because the president wants to make sure... [are you sitting?] ...
:
:
that Rumsfeld has the honour of becoming the longest serving Secretary of Defence in US history.
:
:
:
Sigh.

Sadly, there is little about the US administration that surprises me anymore.

You ask, where CNN, ABC, etc. were these past few years? Doing exactly what they are supposed to do .. generate profit, and serve the interests of the owners of these companies.

The coverage of the Iraq war has been one of the clearest illustrations of the dangers of media consolidation. In the US (and, to a lesser extent, in Canada as well), something like 90% of all major media outlets are controlled by about a half-dozen companies .. Viacom, Time-Warner, General Electric, Fox, and a few others, are all major contributors to political campaigns. It's not surprising that just before the midterm elections, Bush called for a meeting of about a dozen conservative broadcasters at the White House, to basically, in his words, 'catapult the propaganda'.

This is one reason I'm so glad we still have the CBC. It's been under attack, and under-funded, and mismanaged for years, but still manages to produce excellent journalism, insightful documentaries, and good programming. I believe we'd be a far poorer country without it.
